Abstract : A proposed molecular beam tube is described, utilizing the lowest rotational transition in barium oxide (Ba(138)O(16)) at 18.7 GHz. The choice of this special molecule is discussed. Special features of this new molecular beam tube will be the absence of sensitivity to external magnetic fields, very low microwave driving power, and small size and light weight. The frequency of the proposed beam tube is expected to be subject to only two primary causes of error which are not specifically caused by the use of barium oxide: impurities in the exciting microwave signal and phase and Doppler shifts associated with the microwave cavity.
