Abstract : Simple derivations and the resulting curves are presented which show the relation of the volume fraction of cylindrical reinforcements as a function of interfilament spacing for cubic, hexagonal, and rectangular filament packing. Derived curves are presented which show the initial sheet thickness required for cubic, hexagonal, and rectangular filament packing in metal matrix composites fabricated by diffusion bonding. Similar derivations and curves are presented where the filament spacing is controlled by matrix wires during the bonding process. A two-wire method is suggested as a new fabrication method to control filament spacing. (Author)
