Abstract : Systematic investigations have been performed on the behavior of certain transition metal ions in solvents of different donor properties towards azide ions, chloride ions and bromide ions. Spectrophotometric, potentiometric and conductometric techniques have been used. The ionizing properties of a solvent increase with increasing donor number. The formation of complex compounds becomes more difficult in a solvent of high donor number. In a solvent of low donor number both solubilities and ionization are smaller, but coordination reactions with competitive ligands are favored. Autocomplex formation is expected when the donor properties of solvent molecules and competitive ligands are not vastly different. The influence of steric factors becomes important with small metal ions of high coordination number and with large and bulky solvent molecules. The dielectric constant of the solvent is responsible mainly for the electro lytic dissociation of ions and thus important for electrochemical considerations.
