Abstract : An investigation was performed to obtain the liquid-vapor phase equilibria of the helium-carbon dioxide system. The temperature range covered was from 220 K to 290 K, using isotherms at nominal temperatures of 220, 230, 245, 260, 275, and 290 K. The pressure range was from the prevailing vapor pressure of CO2 to 200 atmospheres, except for the 290 K isotherm which was covered only to 85 atmospheres. The experimental work was done using a vapor recirculation-type apparatus, which was equipped with means to accurately measure the temperature and pressure, as well as to accurately control the temperature. The analyses were performed by gas chromatography. The helium-carbon dioxide vapor-liquid system has not been run before, therefore it is not possible to make a comparison of results. Prediction of the vapor composition using the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation and pure component properties was done, and fair agreement with experiment was found. The accuracy of the experimental results is believed to be within 3% of the reported values. Pressures are accurate to + or - 0.1 atmosphere for pressures below 100 atmospheres and + or - 0.3 atmospheres for pressures above 100 atmospheres. The temperatures are believed to be accurate to + or - 0.1 K. (Author)
