Abstract : The effect on selected physiological parameters of Macaca mulatta of intramuscular injection of sernylan was compared with that of restraint by a straitjacket. The differences in respiratory minute volume, tidal volume, respiration rate and pulse rate were highly significant (P less than or equal to 0.01). In addition, both methods of restraint resulted in estimates of minute volumes that differed significantly from the minute volumes predicted by Guyton's equation. With sernylan the minute volume was about one-half that predicted by Guyton, but with the straitjacket the minute volume was about 60% higher. (Author)
