Abstract : The mutual coupling in a two- and three-element parallel-plate waveguide array is calculated for the TEM waveguide mode using wedge diffraction and surface integration techniques. The diffraction across the intermediate array element of the three-element array is calculated by surface integration techniques. Calculations of mutual coupling in the two- and three-element array have been experimentally verified for guide widths of 0.288, 0.347, and 0.66 lambda. The mutual coupling results are presented graphically as a function of waveguide separation up to a maximum of 2.45 lambda. For three-element mutual coupling two calculated curves are presented. One curve shows mutual coupling without the interaction component due to the intermediate guide and the second includes the interaction component. Total coupling into the center element and the end element of the three-element array is presented for a guide width of 0.347 lambda and for two guide separations of 0.455 lambda and 2.28 lambda. The total coupling is given as a function of excitation phase which, in turn, is directly related to the scan angle. The technique of the analysis is presently limited to the three-element array.
