Abstract : As a result of the engineering effort under this program, the problems associated with the construction of a 94-GHz parametric amplifier are completely known and, in fact, nearly solved. Performance measurements made on a prototype amplifier at 70 GHz is sound in theory and practice. The only remaining major problem, yet to be solved before low-noise amplification at 94GHz is possible, is the realization of a varactor diode having a cut-off frequency at zero bias of greater than 400 GHz. In spite of the limitations imposed on this program by the lack of a suitable varactor diode, several original parametric amplifier circuit innovations resulted, including: (1) The development of a single-diode amplifier configuration which can be used to 35 GHz. (2) The extension of the basic balanced amplifier design to include operation at 70 GHz with unpackaged subminiature varactor diodes. (Author)
