Abstract : The technical summary of the total activities on the Inverter/Regulator Program for the Naval Air Systems Command is presented in this report. This contract has resulted in the design, development, and fabrication of two prototype units which utilize state-of-the-art components and microminiature control circuitry. The first of these is a DC-DC Converter which utilizes the basic power circuit of a unit developed under to which is added microminiature control circuitry. Improvement has been noted in the areas of circuit simplification and reliability as a result of the substitution of microcircuit and control components for the discrete parts previously used. The efficiency with 28 volts output is more than 90% over the load range of 25 to 70 watts output. The DC input voltage varies from 16 V at no load to 10 V at 70 watts output. The second prototype unit is a 400 Hz sine wave DC-AC High Frequency Bridge Chopper Inverter which has been designed, developed, and fabricated in its entirety under the present contract. The design objectives of 100 watts output, with 90% efficiency and 10 lb/kw weight to power ratio, formed the basis for the design and development effort. However, due primarily to the limitations of state-of-the-art components, a maximum efficiency of 86.5% and a power component weight to output power ratio of 15 lb/kw have been realized for an input voltage range of 18 to 12 VDC. The control circuit is microminiaturized, using an optimum combination of monolithic and hybrid type microcircuits wherever microminiaturization was feasible. A characterization of these types of circuits over the range of 10 watts to 10 kw has been made and is reported here.
