Abstract : The primary problem in the calculation of the differential scattering cross section for hydrogen molecular ions is the derivation of an approximate expression for the probability that the hydrogen molecular ion will be oriented, prior to impact, in such a way as to avoid disruption during scattering. Using a simple model, an approximate expression for the orientation probability is obtained. Differential cross sections for the scattering of hydrogen molecular ions from carbon and krypton are calculated using classical scattering theory and the derived orientation probability. Impact energies of 100 to 1000 electron volts are considered. In addition differential cross sections for protons scattered from carbon and krypton are presented. (Author)
