Abstract : This report describes in detail three pieces of research in which high frequency ultrasonic techniques have been used: (1) An investigation of acoustic paramagnetic resonance of Ni(2+) ions in KMgF3. Both the absorption and dispersion of ultrasonics have been measured as a function of an applied field at a frequency of 9.4 Gc/s. From these experiments the magnetoelastic tensors /G11/ and /G44/ have been found to have values of 58 and 39 /cm/ unit strain respectively. (2) The measurement of the elastic constant of KMgF3, which is a corollary to the work described in 1. (3) An investigation of the ultrasonic echo patterns obtained in acoustic paramagnetic resonance experiments of Fe(2+) in MgO under saturation conditions. It is shown that the anomalous results which are observed are almost certainly due to inhomogeneities in the distribution of Fe(2+) ions in the crystal. These give rise to phase effects when the applied magnetic field is varied. (Author)
