Abstract : An experimental sub-miniature RF delay line and the associated electronics were designed and fabricated. This equipment provides increased bandwidth over that currently available in delay lines employed in field (SIF) type equipment. A group of quartz delay lines is used to provide 22 high resolution outputs ranging in delay from 1.450 microsec to 98.600 microsec and with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.050 microsec. Broad band amplifiers are used to drive the delay lines with the 60 MHz input and to recover the output signals. The recovery amplifiers feed linear video detectors which serve as the final output stage of the equipment. Eight of the twenty-two delays also have outputs which provided stretched pulses. Using LC delay lines, the 0.450 microsec input pulses are stretched by varying amounts ranging from 0.100 to 0.250 microsec. The equipment provides a minimum bandwidth of approximately 7.6 MHz at all taps. The input pulse rise time of .050 to .100 microsec is not degraded. The six modules used in the unit were tested successfully over a temperature range of -54 C to +50 C. Gain tracking at the output is plus or minus 1.5 db. This can be reduced to plus or minus 0.5 db simply by reducing the reflections within the quartz. In conclusion it is felt that equipment with the desired bandwidths, delay accuracy, and other electrical characteristics can be constructed within the half cubic foot volume and made to operate over a temperature range of -54 C to +65 C. Future models might use integrated circuits which have become available since the start of this program. This would help to reduce both size and heat dissipation. (Author)
