Abstract : This is the final report of a program to evaluate low-temperature matrix fuel cell electrodes on the basis of performance, cost and endurance characteristics. Testing was performed on single cells with an active electrode area of two by two inches. Endurance tests of 2000 hours were completed on cells with standard alkaline electrodes and on several types of lower-cost cathodes and anodes. Significant improvements in life and costs were demonstrated for both cathodes and anodes during the program. Two types of anode exceeded the cost-to-power ratio goals. One of these also exceeded the efficiency goal after 2000 hours of life. One type of cathode exceeded the cost-to-power ratio goals after 2000 hours of life, but only at lower performance levels. More development and test effort is recommended to optimize the best combinations. (Author)
