Abstract : Investigations were performed over the past four years on the feasibility of spectrochemical analysis of trace elements using a hollow cathode discharge as a light source. Earlier studies were performed on spectrochemical analysis of non-metallic non-conducting materials charged within a hollow cathode made of a suitable metallic conducting material. Investigations are presented in this report for the analysis of a metallic conducting sample which has been mechanically machined as a hollow cathode. Tests were performed on trace analyses of some metallic elements in a zinc base alloy. Zinc alloy specimens from the United States National Bureau of Standards were evaluated in the spectra range of 2000 - 2900 A. Work is progressing toward spectrochemical analysis of non-metallic elements in a metallic matrix used as a hollow cathode light source. (Author)
