Abstract : The objective of this program was to develop highly stable compact, mechanically tunable 1/4 watt L-band solid state radiosonde transmitters. Two main approaches were investigated: one approach was to use stripline oscillators, the other coaxial cavity oscillators. After several months of work it became evident that the coaxial oscillator approach was superior to the stripline approach, and most of the remaining effort was therefore concentrated on improving the coaxial transmitters. Six coaxial radiosonde transmitters were constructed and delivered to ECOM. Each transmitter met all of the contract specifications except for pulling figure which ranged from 4.0 to 6.4 MHz as compared with the required 1 MHz. The transmitters had a minimum power output of 250 mW over the required tuning range of 1660 to 1700 MHz, and the frequency of each unit varied less than 1 MHz over the temperature range from -70 to +75C. The best stripline oscillator gave a minimum power output of 300 mW with 21% efficiency over the tuning range from 1660 to 1700 MHz, but with a pulling figure of 21 MHz. One hybrid integrated circuit was delivered to ECOM. This circuit, which was mounted in a modified TO-36 transistor package, gave a power output of 180 mW at 1683 MHz with 12% efficiency. (Author)
