Abstract : The Intermittent Duty Cycle Simulator endurance test demonstrating mechanical power extraction from the flywheel was performed. The planned test called for 10,000 cycles, however, the test could only be partially completed (1745 cycles) before impending failure and degraded performance required termination of the test. The first failure of the clutches occurred after 382 cycles. The clutch assembly was refurbished, and failure then recurred on the second cycle. The clutch assembly was again refurbished, and modified to allow more separation of the clutch plates, and to increase the oil flow through the clutch plates. The simulator then performed very satisfactorily until 1650 cycles total were completed. Clutch slippage and increased drag losses began to appear and it became necessary to terminate the test. The Continuous Duty Cycle Simulator has completed 191 simulated 5 hour missions and a total of 961.7 test hours of operation. Testing was interrupted at 48.9 and 174.2 hours of operating time due to rotary seal leakage. Possible causes for the seal failures are being investigated, such as, improper installation procedure, and 'O' ring seal swelling. (Author)
