Abstract : This report describes the results of rock bolt field and laboratory investigations conducted to evaluate various types of rock bolts and rock mechanics instruments and to develop improved types of instruments. The report presents the results of field evaluation studies on seven types of extensometers as well as laboratory and field studies on six types of rock bolt load measurement devices. Developmental work on a new type of borehole deformation gage and rock bolt load cell is described. A description is given of a new type extensometer which was developed by combining the most desirable features of two existing extensometers. Data and general conclusions are presented regarding the performance of loaded rock bolts and the deformations induced in the rock by the bolt loads. The results of the investigations provided information for planning a more extensive underground experimental installation which is presently in progress as part of the rock bolt research program being conducted by the Omaha District, Corps of Engineers.
