Abstract : Methods for the mechanical recognition of characters which contain on a digital basis a code within the character, identified in that the characters which consist of several horizontal code areas (1, 2, 4) and those codings interdepend to a certain extent, upon scanning, are evaluated through the change of the coding possible in every area's n-code positions; thusly, a change of the coding condition in each of the n-elements present comes about only in one of the coding areas present, by which none of the possible n-elements is omitted and the sum of all coding processes (results) presents a synchronized cycle pulse series which consists of so many pulses, as the employed code contains n-elements. Method according to right 1 is identified by the fact that for the prevention of cross talk of various code areas between these, in each case a dead zone (3) is planned, in which no data required for the evaluation are present. Method according to rights 1 and 2 is identified by the fact that the code elements located in the dead zone are printed out at those spots where two adjacent code areas are used. Method according to right 1 to 3 is identified by the fact that a decoding switching is released, which at the beginning of each character scanning simultaneously in several, at least on two areas of the employed code undertakes a condition change. Method according to right 1 to 4 is identified by the fact that for the various code areas separate scanning devices are used. (Author)
