Abstract : Tests were conducted on MIL-H-5606B, Esso 3158, Oronite 8515, and Dow Corning XF-1-0302 fluids contained in tubing at 3,000 psig and in simulated hydraulic reservoirs at 30 psig. U. S. .50-caliber armor-piercing incendiary ammunition was used against these fluids. Results of the tests show a significant reduction in both amount and duration of flame for each of the candidate fluids. The vulnerability of seven structural modifications of simulated hydraulic reservoirs containing MIL-H-5606B fluid were evaluated and compared with conventional aluminum reservoirs. Two of the configurations warrant further design optimization studies. These are (1) molded-laminated-rubber construction over aluminum, and (2) glass filament-wound construction with a sheet rubber stock overwrap.
