Abstract : The objective is to investigate means of improving the power handling capabilities of extended-interaction resonators. The effort was directed toward development of a resonator capable of operation at one megawatt of CW power at 8 GHz. Computer programs for the prediction of the resonator performance were developed. The performance of three-gap and four-gap inductively-coupled cavity resonators having uniform gap spacing were analyzed for various values of the resonator design parameters. The result of these analyses were used in establishing general design criteria for extended-interaction resonators. The results obtained from the analyses using a perveance 1 x 10 to the minus 6th power beam, showed that a four-gap resonator does not give the expected increase in the power handling capability over a three-gap resonator. This was found to be due to rf remodulation of the beam in the early stages of the resonator. The beam redomulation was studied in great detail in order to improve the resonator and buncher design. An experimental program was initiated to investigate the methods of lowering the conductor losses normally experienced in resonators. A detailed mapping of the power dissipation within the individual cells was obtained by cold tests of the typical resonator using a material substitution technique. Analyses of the power handling capability was performed for a typical cooling design.
