Abstract : Research concerned: (1) lithium batteries based on organic aprotic solvents and (2) aqueous AgO/Zn batteries. Techniques were established for reducing the impurity content of propylene carbonate to less than 10 ppm. Reference electrode was developed for use with LiClO4/PC solutions. Thin film Cu/CuF2 electrodes were formed by electroplating in anhydrous HF-KF. The discharge behavior of silver oxide was studied in aqueous KOH. Amalgamated silver and gold are satisfactory O2-removal electrodes for AgO/Zn batteries. Hydrogen evolution is of the same order as on zinc. Pre-electrolysis of aqueous KOH will introduce trace impurities into solution if the electrode is allowed to reach O2 evolution.
