Abstract : This report presents the results of production acceptance testing of the 7.62mm MXU-470/A machine gun module. Data are grouped under three main objectives to determine (1) module system performance, (2) aircraft compatibility, and (3) system maintainability. Module system performance was satisfactory except for the following: (1) when the gun was set at the 3,000-spm (shot per minute) rate, the gun fired too fast, (2) the system failed to operate properly at -65 F temperature and after exposure to fungus, and (3) the boresight bias was excessive. The module was found to be compatible with the AC-47D aircraft. A ground harmonization procedure was established and used successfully during this test to boresight the guns at depression angles of 10, 12, and 14 degrees. The optimum gun depression angle for maximum accuracy was found to be 14 degrees. The simplicity of design of the module has made maintenance easier than that of the SUU-11A/A gun pod previously used in the AC-47D. The MAU-82/A delinking loader, however, caused loading problems during the test and is difficult to maintain due to its design. No special aerospace ground equipment or tools are required to maintain the module. Firing of the guns aboard the AC-47D aircraft in flight produces high intensity noise which can result in partial hearing loss to the aircrew unless proper protection is provided for the ears.
