Abstract : This report describes the development, construction, and final performance of 5-port single-junction ferrite circulators in C band stripline, X band stripline and X band waveguide configurations. The theory of N-port circulators, including postulated modes of operation for 5- and 6-port circulators, is discussed. Complete test data are given for the three exploratory development models in each of the three configurations. The C band stripline units, which incorporate true single-junction center conductors with reduced stripwidth impedance matching, have a 42.5% operating bandwidth. In a typical unit, maximum VSWR is 1.5:1, maximum insertion loss is 0.9 db, and minimum isolations between port 1 and ports 3, 4, and 5 respectively, are 18 db, 28 db, and 53 db. An operating bandwidth of 34% was achieved in the X band stripline circulators using pentagonal-junction center conductors and dielectric impedance matching transformers. Maximum VSWR over this bandwidth is 1.5:1, maximum insertion loss is 0.7 db and minimum isolation is 13 db. The X band waveguide circulators incorporate two circular ferrite pucks separated by a metal tuning post and concentric sleeve of dielectric material. VSWR in these units is less than 1.5:1, insertion loss is less than 1.0 db, and isolation is greater than 10 db over a 3.4% bandwidth. (Author)
