Abstract : The report discusses the design, development, construction and experimental evaluation of a heterodyne receiver for 10.6 microns. Heterodyne detection was demonstrated with propagation over a near ground level atmospheric path with a total length of 1.68 miles. Signal-to-noise ratios near the quantum limit were attained for both reflective and diffuse targets. Using a receiver aperture of 5 cm, no serious deleterious atmospheric effects were noted. Only relatively minor low frequency scintillations were observed. A balanced mixer technique was employed using a matched pair of Cu:Ge detectors. The receiver was evaluated using a frequency modulated 10.6 micron laser radar system, capable of measuring both range and velocity. The balanced mixer was found to be useful for cancelling amplitude fluctuations from the frequency modulated CO2 laser. (Author)
