Abstract : The analysis of 13,000 mi of continuously recorded bathymetric and seismic data in the Mediterranean Sea indicates a considerably different physiography and sediment distribution in its western and eastern segments. Seismic reflection profiling indicates much thicker accumulations of sediment in the Western Mediterranean than in the tectonically active Eastern Mediterranean. In the Balearic Basin, abyssal hills previously interpreted as salt domes have been identified in the subsurface, smoothed by sedimentation, over a large region in the Balearic Sea. Bottom photographs taken in the Ionian Sea by the ATLANTIC SEAL reveal outcrops of an indurated or consolidated sediment on the Mediterranean Ridge, indicating tectonic activity of the redge or lack of accumulation of sediments for a considerable length of time.
