Abstract : Polyhydroxyphenylenes have been prepared by treating phenol, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylether, and p-phenylphenol with ferric chloride at moderate temperatures. The resulting polymers are black or dark brown. Most of them are infusible, but they are easily soluble in dimethylformamide and dimehtylsulfxide, while lower molecular weight fractions are also soluble in acetone and one polymer in methanol. Inherent viscosities of up to 0.21 have been obtained, and molecular weights between 600 and approximately 5000. The structures of the polymers have been determined by elemetal analysis, NMR, infrared spectroscopy, decomposition studies, and secondary reactions. The thermal behavior has been evaluated by softening range determination, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. (Author, modified).
