Abstract : The primary objective was to investigate the properties and behavior of elastomeric insulation during transient and steady-state heating conditions, and the influence of these properties on the materials performance. A second objective was to develop a technique for predicting insulation performance for any stop-start duty cycle. Tests were conducted to determine the thermal, chemical, physical, and structural properties of five representative materials for correlation with performance in 1-, 2-, and 3-pulse motor firings. The correlation analysis and technical appraisal of the results indicated that heat capacity, diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and heat of combustion of the virgin material were significantly related to performance. These properties were then determined on ten additional materials. All fifteen materials were reviewed and four primary candidates and three secondary candidates were selected for further evaluation in 5-pulse and 12-pulse motors. The ablative data from these motors verified that the EPR materials would be excellent candidates for pulse motor applications. Studies were also conducted on an analytical technique for predicting performance of elastomeric insulation in pulse motors using laboratory determined properties as input parameters. A correlation analysis was conducted to establish the relationship of fillers, additives, and chemical ingredients to firing performance and significant properties. The effects of heat soaking and thermal cycling on the lap shear strength of insulation-case bonds were determined. (Author)
