Abstract : Composite double-base propellants of identical chemical composition were prepared via the base grain and slurry cast process for a mechanical properties comparison. The consolidated grains obtained via the base grain process when a mixture of triethyleneglycol dinitrate and trimethylolethane trinitrate was used as the casting solvent was compared with the chemically identical slurry cast propellant. The dependence of the mechanical properties of the base grain propellants on the necessity and ability to use very active plasticizers is pointed out. In either system polymer concentration gradients exist that limit the mechanical properties, and the latter can be improved by furthering polymer solvation and diffusion. Pertinent approaches are reviewed.
