Abstract : A single-sweep polarographic technique developed at this Center was evaluated aboard an oceanographic research vessel. Many samples of sea water were collected, analyzed aboard ship, and, after the cruise, analyzed in the laboratory. The data are compared with that obtained by Hudson Laboratories, Columbia University personnel by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Good agreement between the two methods is obtained for copper in surface waters. The results show copper to be present in the range of 5-10 parts per billion. The data show very uniform concentration of copper in surface water over large areas of the South American Pacific Ocean; however, the concentration of copper varied considerably at various depths to 4,940 meters.
