Abstract : Gamma-ray spectra over the energy range 0 to 2.82 mev were obtained from samples of sand, silt, and clay. All tests were conducted in the laboratory in a specially designed low-background enclosure. Data were analyzed by considering both photopeak energy level and radioactive source content in relation to soil parameters. The results indicate that the thorium, uranium, and potassium photopeak counts are proportional to moisture content expressed as a percentage of dry soil weight. When expressed as ratios to one another, the photopeaks lose nearly all moisture content information but appear to be related to each of the three selected specific soil types. Appendixes A and B present a listing of the FORTRAN computer program and a discussion of the data reduction techniques that it uses in the analysis of gamma-ray spectral data. (Author)
