Abstract : The objective of this work was the study and experimental verification leading to the design of a high power S band variable polarizer. This polarizer must be capable of transforming a TE sub 10 mode transmitter signal into outputs suitable for production of two basic orthogonal linear polarizations, in addition to right- and left-hand circular polarizations. Switching time between degrees of polarization is to be less than 200 microseconds. The characteristics of the variable polarizer include objectives of 1 mw peak, 2 kw average power operating over the band 3.1 MHz to 3.6 MHz; the study including the feasibility of increased power handling to 10 mw peak, 20 kw average. Recent results indicated the feasibility of attaining the final design parameters by the use of nonreciprocal latching phasers as active elements of the polarizer. Polarizer levels to 1 mw peak, 3900 watts average (dependent upon polarizer configuration) have been attained. Feasibility of attainment of final goals was indicated by the recent development of adequate cooling methods coupled to nonmagnetostrictive garnet materials. Studies included various polarizer configurations which appear compatible with radar system concepts in obtaining information on all polarizations reflected from a nonuniform target. An improved method of parameter specification was studied which adequately specified those parameters important to both systems and component specialists. (Author)
