Abstract : Investigation of catalytic activity in electrochemical reduction of oxygen was carried out on the following series of bronzes: LixWO3, KxWO3, CsxWO3, NaxMoO3, NaxV2O5, SrxNbO3 and BaxTaO3. Solubility experiments revealed poor stability of molybdenum and vanadium bronzes in acid media, and very good stability of niobium and tantalum bronzes in both acid and alkaline electrolytes. All bronzes exhibited catalytic activity in acid electrolyte comparable to this of sodium tungsten bronzes. A potentiometric method of following the homogeneous oxidation rate of ferrous-ferric couple by molecular oxygen was devised based on measuring the potential of the redox couple. Attempts were made to catalyze this reaction by means of a suspension of a solid catalyst (platinum black and activated charcoal).
