Abstract : This report shows the adaptation of conventional filter design formulas for application to filters using ferrite materials for the inductor cores. Correspondence of the predicted results to measured results was found to be good. It is shown that, under certain conditions, ferrite shielding beads or small ferrite cores can be used to advantage in radio interference (low pass) filters. For example, several small coils on separate ferrite cores can be used to produce a required series impedance arm without core saturation and capacitive by-passing that would occur for a larger single coil necessary to produce the same impedance. Advantages of the ferrites are most obvious for high frequencies, relatively low currents, and relatively small attenuation requirements.
