Abstract : The efforts on this program were directed toward the fabrication and evaluation of oriented polycrystalline cubic ferrimagnetic materials for application in microwave devices. The materials investigated were polycrystalline lithium ferrite, nickel ferrite, nickel zinc ferrite, cobalt ferrite, magnesium manganese aluminum ferrite, magnesium manganese ferrite, yttrium iron garnet, and 20% aluminum-20% gadolinium substituted yttrium iron garnet. The factors influencing alignment, the procedures and parameter values used in the preparation of the oriented materials, and the results obtained are discussed for each material composition. The results of device investigations in a resonance isolator and in a latching circulator, using both oriented and unoriented samples of these materials at low and at high microwave power levels, are presented. The performance of the latching circulator when using the oriented material was superior to that obtained using the unoriented material. This result infers an improvement in the square loop characteristics of the oriented material. Results are also reported on preliminary investigations in the preparation of thick ferrite films deposited on aluminum oxide substrates and the performance of these substrates in a microstrip junction circulator.
