Abstract : Basic equations that express the general characteristics of a 'banana' trajectory with respect to a non-rotating earth are derived. Specifically, relationships between the range, burnout conditions, apogee altitude and flight time are developed. These relations are then shown in nomographs, which are constructed for a range distance of 5500 and 8500 nautical miles, respectively. By using the equations, a time history of the flight patterns of objects in a banana trajectory is calculated and illustrated graphically. For the realistic three-dimensional model, the effects of the earth's rotation are discussed, and the azimuthal corrections at burnout that would be necessary to account for the rotation effect are shown both mathematically and graphically.
