Abstract : The photoreactions of aromatic anils have been investigated. These reactions, carried out in NMR tubes, were monitored by NMR. The most important conclusion was that cyclization was not a necessary occurrence during photodegradation. Cis configurations promoted photodegradation. In an analogous system, diphenylamine underwent a photoreaction in CDCl3, but did not photocyclize. The atmosphere over the solution in the NMR tube had an effect on the resolution in the spectrum; outgassed solutions gave spectra of the best resolution. (Author)
