Abstract : As tool for the precise calibration of very large antennas, well-calibrated standards of moderate gain are required. For this purpose, two small pyramidal horns (Waveline Model 599) were calibrated by the absolute gain method at 7.3 and 7.95 GHz. Their measured absolute gain was found to be 14.03 dB and 14.57 dB, respectively. The rms uncertainty in the measurements was plus or minus 0.15 dB with 99.0 per cent confidence level. The method of absolute gain calibration of antennas is reviewed. The absolute gain of a pyramidal horn is computed, the manufacturer's values are quoted, and the experimental procedures and their results are given. Careful considerations are given to various sources of errors affecting accuracy of measurements; when necessary, accurate corrections to the measured gains are precisely determined and applied to the data. The lower and upper bounds on the confidence level for the measured gain to be within a given range from the mean value for the gain are evaluated in the Appendix. (Author)
