Abstract : Mass spectrometric studies of appropriate species produced in the H2 - BeO system under Knudsen conditions were carried out at temperatures up to 2485C using rhenium cell components. Equilibrium constants were evaluated from parent-ion intensities derived from gaseous species involved in the following reactions: BeO(g) + OH(g) = BeOH(g) + O(g); Be2O(g) + OH(g) = BeOH(g) + BeO(g); BeO(c) + H(g) = BeOH(g); Be2O(g) + H(g) = BeOH(g) + Be(g). Third law calculations based on these constants, respectively, from reactions (1-4) gave -24.5 plus or minus 8, -32.5 plus or minus 16, -10 plus or minus 16 and -25.5 plus or minus 20 kcal/mole for the heat of formation of BeOH(g). A weighted average of -23.6 kcal/mole is indicated, and the uncertainty is estimated to be plus or minus 6 kcal/mole. Examination of the mass spectrum for vapor species having the composition (BeO)n.H2O, where n = 1 through 5, was conducted. Detectable quantities of such species were not found to be present in the H2-BeO system. (Author)
