Abstract : Efforts were directed toward elucidating the mechanism of the adsorption of hydrocarbons on platinum. Determination of the characteristic constants of adsorption is accomplished by the adoption of a general method consisting in the combined use of three different techniques: gas chromatography, analysis of the adsorption by the decoupling method, and analysis of the steady state polarization curves. The theoretical bases of these three techniques are discussed and the general method is applied to the study of a number of alkanes and alkenes, at a temperature of 80C and in the media of H3PO4 5N and H2SO4 1N. Data are derived concerning the mechanism of adsorption and the relationship existing between the kinetic constants and the structure of the molecules involved is clarified. (Author)
