Abstract : A plan to accelerate conventional Minex tests of fuels was proposed, involving tests at a reduced number of temperature levels. Results indicated that good repetition of results could not be obtained unless the entire schedule of runs was repeated. It was also desired to verify that gum would not form in an extended time period if a short test indicated gum-free operation. A test run for 110 hours at the highest temperature that indicated no gum in 15 hours. At the end of the longer test, a small but definite evidence of gumming was evident. Fouled Minex tubes have customarily been discarded before running new tests. This involves an undersirable cost of materials and manpower. A technique was developed for renovating fouled tubes in place, and restoring them to essentially new condition. To accomplish this, the tube is isolated from the system and treated with clean, compressed, heated air for about 30 minutes. A tube wall temperature of about 850F is necessary to remove the gum deposits. A similar treatment is used to clean the preheater section. (Author)
