Abstract : Based on a vertical motion model derived by Martin (1964), and applied by Jarrell (1967), a method is developed for producing diabatic heating function fields at 50 millibars from independently computed fields of diabatic and adiabatic vertical motion. Vertical motions over and above the adiabatically computed part are found to be of major significance in the diabatic heating function calculations. The resulting heating function fields are shown to be compatible with existing synoptic trends at 50 millibars and above, for the data period 1-5 April 1963. A proposed circulation linkage involving ozone-heating areas is advanced, which fits all of the mean zonal computations of diabatic heating and of vertical motion into a consistent pattern. (Author)
