Abstract : An effort was directed toward the optimization of a chromium alloy which was strengthened with tantalum and carbon. Two classes of alloys resulted from this and the previous work. The Chrome-90 class has moderate strength, good ductility, and excellent resistance to atmospheric contamination. The Chrome-90S class has improved strength capabilities but reduced resistance to contamination and marginal ductility. Property evaluation of these alloys was undertaken as a second phase of this program. Tensile and impact transition temperatures were determined. A fractography study was conducted to detect any differences between ductile and brittle alloys. An attempt was also made to relate these differences to chemical variations. Stress-rupture values for the 1800 to 2150F temperature range were determined. Nitrogen and oxygen penetration of these samples was examined by optical means. Ductility after exposure was determined on tensile samples after they were heated in static air to 1800, 2000, and 2200F for various lengths of time. Sulfidation-corrosion and plasma-erosion tests were conducted to compare Chrome-90 with INCO 713C. Uses as thermocouple protection tubes, fluidic devices, small components for jet engines are also briefly described. (Author)
