Abstract : This theoretical study provides a pictorial view of the multi-wedge diffraction phenomenon. Physical insight into the scattered field from the second wedge can be gained from these results. Furthermore, because the problem is considered with general boundary conditions, this analysis also provides qualitative information on the effects of physical parameters such as the angle of incidence of plane wave, the surface impedances on the facets of each wedge, etc. on the multi-diffracted field. By varying these parameters, the solution automatically reduces to that of a class of well-known problems; for example, the diffraction of plane wave by two conducting half-planes, etc. In addition to its theoretical significance, the analysis of this problem can also be of great practical value. In the problem of electromagnetic wave propagation over irregular terrains, one usually approximates such irregularities as hills and mountain ridges by knife-wedges. With the aid of the general representation of the scattered wave obtained herein, a comprehensive understanding of the effects of successive obstacles on electromagnetic wave propagation can be acquired.
