Abstract : The results in this report enable the selection of acceptance test limits when the statistical distributions of the item performance characteristic and of the test set overall error are known. Expressions are derived for the fraction of manufactured items which are good and accepted, good but rejected, bad but accepted, and bad and rejected. From these, one may find other interesting results, such as the fraction of bad items among all accepted items, and the fraction of all items which are rejected. The derivations are based on the assumption that every item is tested after manufacture, and so no sampling plans are considered. The formulas were applied to two cases. In the first case both the performance characteristic and the test set error were assumed to be normally distributed. In the second case, both were assumed uniformly distributed. In each case, the results were tabulated and plotted. (Author)
