Abstract : The diffractive properties of conducting cylindrical structures in the vicinity of dipole antennas have long been utilized as a means toward obtaining more directive patterns. However, the analysis has been carried out for the perfectly conducting case only. The present work is aimed at examining the scattering properties of imperfectly conducting cylinders on the one hand, and at providing answers to the problem of scattering by more than one cylinder on the other. The dipole is taken to be oriented in the axial direction. Attention is directed primarily to the features of the far field. It is shown graphically how the properties of the scatterer affect the overall pattern and, under certain assumptions, what is the nature of the interactions between cylinders for the case of multiple scattering. The solution of the imperfectly conducting case is a contribution to the classical theory of diffraction because it fills a hitherto inexplicable gap and because the results have important applications in antenna design. On the other hand, the analysis of the two cylinder configuration constitutes the first attempt ever to evaluate the interactions between scatterers of large radii in the presence of dipole sources and as such its importance is self-evident.
