Abstract : This report is divided into three areas of study that are designed to develop understanding of the magnitude and the causes of composition changes in Rb vapor cells: production of contaminant gases, depletion of Rb vapor, and diffusion of Rb into glass. Each section discusses some causes of the anticipated composition change and then proceeds to describe the equipment constructed for the study and the procedure used to conduct the experiments. The pertinent results are presented and any conclusions, though necessarily preliminary at this point, are discussed. The studies demonstrated that Rb interaction with glass results in a marked increase in the rate of production of gases in the glass cell and that these gases are principally N2. Preliminary results suggest that the addition of Ne buffer gas to a cell containing Rb again results in an increase of N2 gas evolution. Measurements of the rate of depletion of Rb in cells constructed of similar glass demonstrates also that the Rb vapor concentration decreases appreciably within several hours after introduction of Rb. The planned diffusion studies are discussed in detail. (Author)
