Abstract : A series of calculations was performed on the interactions of lattice defects, in particular on the annealing in gold of quenched-in vacancies and vacancy-impurity complexes during a constant heating rate temperature excursion. The calculations were carried out by developing a system of coupled nonlinear differential equations to represent defect migration, aggregation, and dissociation, and solving the system numerically on a digital computer. Curves for the effective activation energy were obtained as functions of time and temperature. The effects of heating rate, defect migration energy, defect binding energy, and vacancy-impurity complex mobility were studied. The consequences of the low-binding and high-binding models for the divacancy were explored, and only the latter was found to give qualitative agreement with the experimental data of Gegel. (Author)
