Abstract : Mass spectrometric studies of appropriate species produced in the HCl-BeO system under Knudsen conditions were carried out at temperatures up to 2518K, using rhenium cell components. Equilibrium constants were evaluated from parent-ion intensities derived from gaseous species involved in the reaction BeCl(g) + OH(g) = BeOH(g) + Cl(g). Third-law calculations based on these constants gave an average value of -21.3 plus or minus 6.5 kcal/mole for the heat of formation of BeOH(g). Torsion-effusion study of the solid-solid reaction between BeO and graphite which produced Be(g) and CO(g) was not successful; a steady-state torsion pressure was not obtainable. (Author)
