Abstract : The dielectric constant of a polymer film is proportionately increased by the amount of BaTiO3 powder incorporated into the polymer prior to casting. However, this increase in dielectric constant is accompanied by a proportionate decrease in dielectric strength. Films were cast from different polymers containing up to 40 volume percent BaTiO3 powder. The best loaded film was 20 volume percent BaTiO3 in Polycarbonate 2 polymer. Its dielectric strength was considered high enough for high energy storage applications and, consequently, single-layer capacitors were fabricated for testing. The dielectric strengths of the other films were generally too low for use in high energy storage capacitors. The cause of the decrease in dielectric strength of loaded films, the various methods for increasing the dielectric strength of the films, and the need for more information regarding both the characteristics of BaTiO3 surfaces and the dispersion behavior of BaTiO3 in polymers are discussed.
