Abstract : A study was made of population inversion and loss in a large volume, highly doped ruby rod operated from 130-260K. The ruby is operated as an oscillator and the time and integrated input energy required to achieve oscillation at various temperatures is measured. Losses not due to imperfect end reflectors and excited state Cr(3+) atom absorption are combined into one factor. Two separate expressions for the relative ground state population are developed, one involving input energy and the other losses. Matching of these two expressions for each temperature leads to determination of the unknowns. (Author)
