Abstract : The spectral irradiances (350 to 750 millimicrons) of gas-fired thoria mantles containing small percentages of various rare earth oxides were experimentally determined. The data obtained were compared with irradiance values for standard Welsbach mantles (99.3 percent thoria and 0.3 percent ceria) and pure thoria mantles under identical conditions. It was found that additions of rare earths oxides to thoria, other than ceria, reduced the light output of pure thoria, with the exception of terbia, under the conditions investigated. Based upon the experimental work, it is recommended that the systems hafnia-ceria, hafnia-terbia, and thoria-terbia be investigated. Spectral emissivities, in the visible spectrum, of refractory materials have been compiled from a literature survey, and an annotated bibliography of mantle research is also included. (Author)
